A good organic mulch will help keep weeds out of your planting beds while at the same time it is adding humus back to the soil. The mulch works by keeping the weed seeds from reaching the soil, where they germinate. Any seeds that are already in the soil can still germinate, so you may have to pull or kill those weeds the first year or two, until they have all germinated. After that, it is easy sailing; very few weeds should be able to establish themselves if you keep the mulch about three inches thick and loose.
